The Cupcake vs. Chocolate Cake

So as promised, here is the post about Emily's First Birthday party. It was a small party at her Grandma Kathy's House. In attendance were: Emily, Christa, Auntie Mandy, Grandma Kathy, Grandpa Jerry, Grandma B, Grandpa B, Aunt Susie, Uncle Carl, and Me. We had a delicious meal, Stuffed London Broil, with roasted potatoes & veggies, and cinnamon pears & apples. We had chocolate cake (naturally) for dessert with ice cream. After dinner we adjourned to the family room to help Emily open her presents. A lot of other really fun stuff happened but I think that the pictures tell the story of the First Birthday Extravaganza best, so that is what we will do.

Enjoy the photos, and remember after this we go back in time a little to catch you all up on the last month or so, until next time. . .

We started out at the zoo, to see Hudson. It was his 1st birthday, too! Emily brought her polar bear along for the ride. He didn't need a coat, hat, scarf, or mittens like Emily did; he's a polar bear, remember?

There he is, the birthday boy. Happy Birthday, Hudson!

Awwww, time for a little snuggle with Mommy.

Look at Hudson's HUGE Birthday card!

Emily gets ready to leave a message for Hudson.

Happy Birthday, again, Hudson! We'll see you again soon.

"Mommy, LOOK! I'm bigger now! The last time I stood next to this thing, Daddy had to hold me up and I was only as tall as a Newborn Human. Now, I can stand all by myself and I'm taller than a Newborn Human!"

Emily with her Great Bob! She loves Great Bob.

At Great Ray's, Emily was brandishing a large, red shoehorn! "Take that! And That!"

Emily with her Great Ray. He's a silly guy; he makes her giggle.

"Look, Auntie Mandy! I have a spoon and a pan! I have a KITCHEN!!! Would you like some scrambled eggs?"

"Auntie Mandy, what are scrambled eggs? How do you make scrambled eggs?"

"Are the eggs down here?"

"Maybe the eggs are in here."

This is Emily's cake. The theme of her party was cupcakes, so she had to have a "cupcake" cake.

This was everyone else's cake. We also had a "cupcake" cake, but ours was much bigger. After all, there were 9 of us.

While we were busy getting things all set up for her party, she was crawling around amusing herself. One of her favorite places is underneath Grandma Kathy's table. She retreated under here for a little while. She brought her new "1" rubber duck to keep her company.

No party is complete without balloons! She had a huge arrangement, befitting such an important occasion. It included 2 Jumbo balloons: a large pink 1 and a large cupcake. (Both of these balloons are about the same size as Emily herself!)

Steve was outside at the BBQ cooking up the dinner--Stuffed London Broil! Yummy! Emily saw him outside and was banging on the glass door. "Daddy, what are you doing?"

This was also the first day that we decided to use our Wedding China and silverware. (Notice the hand and footprints on the middle of the tablecloth? That's a story for a future blog, so Stay Tuned!) The place cards were Gerber baby food jars filled with animal crackers. They each had a handmade tag with a cupcake (of course) stamped on them and one guest's name written on it.

You can really get a feel for the size of the 2 birthday cakes by looking at this picture of the entire table.

Look at the HUGE stack of presents for this little girl! And just think, Christmas is only 10 days away!

Grandpa B picked Emily up so she could bang and kick at her balloons. She had a great time!

" OK, I'm in my high chair. I've go my bib on! Where's my dinner?"

Emily ate her favorite: cheesy ditalini pasta with peas and carrots.

And halfway through eating, she fell asleep. Poor, tired, little girl!

While Emily slept, her guests opened their goody bags and wrote a greeting on a cupcake plate to commemorate her 1st Birthday.

When Emily woke up, we got her prepared to eat her first chocolate cake. We stripped her down to her onesie, so she wouldn't mess up her cute cupcake outfit, and lit the candles.

"Happy Birthday to You!

Happy Birthday to You!

Happy Birthday, dear Emily!

Happy Birthday to You!"

"Wow! I really get to eat this?!"

And then it began. We're going to let the next few pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy!

When she had frosting in her eyebrows and was looking really full. We decided that enough was enough. We cleaned her up and then she played one of her favorite games . . .

Washcloth Peek-a-Boo!

Grandpa Jerry tried on her First Birthday hat. Silly Grandpa Jerry!

Then it was time for presents!

The last gift was from Daddy . . . her first car! (and it's Pink & Purple!)

Theyeyey asked me how I knew my true love was truuuuue, Ooooooooooh...

Sorry, got carried away. Just curious - did Emily actually eat any cake, or just frosting?

Emily did eat a few crumbs of cake on her actual birthday, but she mostly ate the frosting. The next day, we gave her only the cake, no frosting...She seemed to like the bites that she ate, but spent most of her time crumbling the cake up into its individual cake molecules and mushing them around her tray, or flinging them onto the floor.

What a Birthday Bash! So glad I was there to help celebrate such a wonderful occasion. Happy 1st Birthday.

Does she have a driver's license for that? I love the color of Emily's first car.
